Why the price of gold will continue to rise

4. März 2026

There are arguments against it, but many point to a further rise in the price of gold.

Gold has risen in value by more than 150 percent over the past five years. Experts at J.P. Morgan see the most important factor for higher gold prices as a new era of geopolitical volatility and fragmentation. Inflation, currency devaluation, and irresponsible fiscal policy are also having an impact. All of this makes the precious metal an extremely popular investment vehicle. And with geopolitical turmoil likely to continue, the stage is set for further increases in the price of the precious metal.

What could slow down the gold price would be if central banks ended their buying spree. Since 2022, when Russia's war of aggression began, net gold purchases by central banks have roughly doubled. The reason was the central banks' desire to diversify away from the US dollar, especially after Russian assets were frozen by the US, which caught everyone's attention. There have been instances in the past where central banks stopped buying gold or even sold their gold reserves. The United Kingdom sold over 50 percent of its gold reserves between 1999 and 2002. And Switzerland decoupled its currency from the price of gold. The price of gold subsequently fell by 13 percent but then recovered. From 2019 onwards, the majority of central banks became gold buyers.

However, this scenario, in which central banks avoid gold and demand from private investors stagnates, is rather unlikely. Emerging markets, led by China, are focusing on gold reserve purchases. And there is still plenty of room for growth. In China, for example, gold reserves account for only 8.6 percent of total reserves. Industrialized countries hold approximately 47 percent of their reserves in gold, while emerging markets hold only about 19 percent.
