It remains to be seen whether this means that most of the volatility is over. But even if a consolidation phase continues, the next upward trend will come. Currently, inflation data from the US is still available. According to this, annual consumer price inflation rose by 2.4 percent in January. In December, the increase was 2.7 percent. The gold price seems to have benefited from the inflation data, as it points to interest rate cuts by the Fed. The first interest rate cut is expected in June, and interest rate cuts are always positive for the gold price.
In China, the New Year celebrations will take place, meaning that a significant market will be closed. The celebrations will last from February 16 to March 3. This could mean a somewhat quieter period for the gold price. On the other hand, the New Year celebrations usually have a supportive effect on the gold price. Incidentally, China also bought gold again in January, although 1.2 tons of gold was not too much. But at least this was the 15th consecutive month in which China increased its gold reserves. The fundamentals for the gold market are generally considered positive. According to chart technicians, the price of the precious metal is in a long-term upward trend, which should continue in 2026.
And if the price of the precious metal were to move sideways for a while, this would not be unusual after the sharp price fluctuations. However, price declines should attract buyers, so that higher prices may soon be seen again. In terms of geopolitics, the dispute between US President Donald Trump and Iran over its nuclear and missile program could intensify. Trump would probably like to see a change in power. In any case, this is one factor that could boost the price of gold.
