The Energy Institute has released its annual Statistical Review. The conclusion: The expansion of new energy technologies continues to advance rapidly, but global energy demand also continues to rise. Global energy consumption increased by 1.7 percent in 2025, while CO2 emissions rose by 1.1 percent. Fossil fuels still account for about 86 percent of the global energy mix. Nearly 71 percent of new electricity generation comes from renewable energy sources. Global solar power generation has risen by a remarkable 30 percent.
New electricity consumers — data centers and AI applications — have grown by 20 percent and currently account for about 2.4 percent of global electricity consumption. Many countries have already recognized how important it is to ensure a sufficient supply of the raw materials needed for the energy transition. Raw materials such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel are needed for high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Copper is also in increasing demand. Whether it was the oil price shocks of the 1970s, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, or the de facto suspension of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, all of these events have demonstrated how closely energy and geopolitics are intertwined.
The costs of wind and solar energy have fallen in recent decades, making them more competitive compared to fossil fuels. But even in the future, breakthroughs in innovation will trigger surges in demand for strategic and critical raw materials.
